M A T C H I T
by Bob Pellegrino
Here is a challenging 40-column memory game for all ages. In the
spirit of the card game, CONCENTRATION, you are to use a joystick to locate
matching graphic images until all matches are eliminated from the board.
You can play against a human opponent or the computer, which can range in
memory skills all the way from an elephant's to Ronald Reagan's. At first
it seems easy, but Bob Pellegrino throws in plenty of twists to fog your
memory and make winning difficult.
With MATCH IT, you have to keep an eye on the board. You learn from
your mistakes -- and your opponent's. You simply move to a block with the
joystick and press FIRE to reveal the graphic beneath. Next you try to find
that graphic's match somewhere on the screen. You get points when you do
and get to continue to try to find more matches. Fail to make a match and
it's your opponent's turn.
When you first run the program, it will be in Demo mode. In this mode,
it will cycle from the Game Start screen through the Hi-scores screens to a
short Game Demo and then back to the menu. Press SPACE to get back to the
menu.
If two human players are playing then you can choose whether to play
with a joystick in Port 1 or two joysticks (one in each port) by pressing 4.
Press 2 to play against the computer with the joystick in Port 1. With the
computer as an opponent, you have the option of setting the difficulty level
by pressing 5. The three levels are EASY, MEDIUM and HARD. Press 3 to
cycle through the available game lengths of 5, 10 or 20 levels. WARNING:
The upper levels are really tough!
After entering your name(s), you go to Level 1. The current player's
name will be highlighted at the bottom of the screen. The top part of the
screen is the playing field. There will be a number of blocks and a white
'cursor', which can be moved with the joystick. In the bottom part of the
screen is the scoring section. Both players' names and scores will be
displayed, along with the Level you are currently playing. Also displayed
here during game play are bonuses and special features.
You may quit prematurely by pressing SHIFT-Q. It will take you back to
LOADSTAR, not MATCH IT.
If you match special control graphics, you are endowed with temporary
powers -- in addition to the points you earn for the match. Look for these
symbols:
G - GO AGAIN If you miss a match you will get a free turn.
F - FREEZE Your opponent gets frozen and loses a random number of turns.
W - WILDCARD Your next selection WILL be a match.
A - AUTO PLAY The computer plays your turn for a random number of turns
with the highest degree of accuracy possible, even higher than it plays for
itself when the HARD difficulty setting is selected.
M - AUTO MATCH When you pick the first block, the computer looks for the
hidden match and identifies it for you with a red cursor.
H - HINTS A random number of blocks will be turned over for a short time.
Keep your eyes on the screen!
B - BONUS POINT Pops up occasionally after a match. The higher the
level, the more points you get.
? - MYSTERY Could be anything!
T - THE TUNNEL Takes you to a special bonus game screen. Move the cursor
on this screen to catch the target block and press FIRE to get bonus points.
If you're quick you can catch three or four of the target blocks.
As you can see, this is no ordinary memory game. Depending on how much
time you spend laughing, cursing, stomping or just being cautious, a game
can span many minutes -- or hours.
